There are many stories about how the Kedarnath temple came into existence. The earliest mention of the foundation of this temple is related to the penance of Nar and Narayan. Mahatapasvi Nar and Narayan Rishi, an incarnation of Lord Vishnu, used to do penance on the Kedar Shringa of the Himalayas.

Pleased with his penance, Lord Shiva granted him the boon to reside here forever in the form of Jyotirlinga to fulfill his wish.

According to the first part 40th chapter of Kedar Khand of Skanda Purana, Yudhishthira, etc. Pandava Gana asked Shri Vyas Ji for a way to get rid of the sin of killing the Gotra and killing the Guru.

Vyas Ji started saying that there is no atonement for these sins in the scriptures, without going to Kedar Khand, these sins cannot be waived, you guys go there.

According to the scriptures, it is believed that after the great battle of Kurukshetra, also known as Mahabharata, the Pandavas asked Lord Shiva for forgiveness for the sin of killing their kin. After not finding Lord Shiva in Banaras, the Pandavas traveled to the Himalayas searching for the Almighty. But the Lord was furious and did not want to forgive the Pandavas for the sin of killing their kin.

So he left Kashi to hide from the Pandava brothers and took the form of a bull and roamed the Himalayas in the Garhwal region.

When the Pandavas finally recognized him, he dived into the earth but somehow Bhima caught his hump. Other parts of the bull appeared in other places. The hump in Kedarnath, the navel in the middle Maheshwar, the Bhujaye in Tungnath, the mouth in Rudranath, and the hair in Kalpeshwar. Together these places are called Panch Kedar.

It is believed that the original Kedarnath temple was built by the Pandavas where the hump appeared. The present Kedarnath temple was built by Adi Shankaracharya, who is credited with restoring the glory of this ancient temple.
