Pench National Park Detailed Information Madhya Pradesh Tourism: Pench National Park is a major national park in India. This park is situated in the southern part of Satpura hills.

It was declared a National Park by the Government of Madhya Pradesh in 1983 and in 1992 it was officially declared the 19th Tiger Reserve of India.

The place is named after the Pench River which flows north to south along the Pench National Park. More than 1300 species of rare plants of medicinal importance are found in this park.

Spread over an area of 292.83 square kilometers on the borders of the Seoni and Chhindwara districts, this national park is named after the Pench river that divides it into two parts. This river flows from the north to the south direction of the park. Pench National Park, which has the distinction of being the best tiger reserve in the country, was declared a tiger reserve in 1993.

The park has an abundance of shrubs, vines, trees and plants, herbs, weeds, and grasses. More than 1200 species of plants are found here. The park is home to 164 species of birds, 10 species of amphibians, 33 species of mammals, 30 species of reptiles, and 50 species of fish. Apart from this, different types of insects are also found here.

The park has an abundance of flora and fauna. Apart from panthers and tigers, Pench National Park is also home to chital, blackbuck, black-naped hare, hyena, flying squirrel, sambar, fox, wild boar, porcupine, jackal, four-horned, nilgai, etc. Many birds are also found in abundance in the park, including both native and migratory birds.

These birds include Indian Pitas, white-eyed eagles, cormorants, pied Malabar hornbills, storks, green pigeons, and macharangs.

A total of 5,451 square kilometers of Madhya Pradesh come under submergence due to the construction of the Totladoh dam under the International Hydroelectric Project. Chhindwara’s 31.271 sq km and Seoni’s 17.246 sq km area come under submergence. Experts of famous national parks like Kanha and Bandhavgarh believe that Pench Tiger Park is in better condition from the point of view of natural beauty.

Pench National Park History

The history of Pench National Park is very old. The park’s natural richness is also mentioned in the Ain-i-Akbari, a 16th-century document from the reign of Emperor Akbar during the Mughal era.

Where this park is located, it was originally declared a sanctuary in 1977, then in 1983 it was made a national park. Pench National Park, which has the distinction of being the best tiger reserve, was made a tiger reserve in the year 1993.

Talking about the nearest railway station is Seoni which is about 30 km from Pench.

The best time to visit Pench National Park is from the months of February to June. There is a charge of 15 rupees for Indians and 150 rupees for foreigners in this park.
