Palpala Dam or Baldiha Dam in Shamakhunta block of Mayurbhanj district. Built on river Palpala over 205 Sqkm area for the irrigation project. At present, 10 to 15 acres of land are being irrigated in the Rabi season with water from the dam while there is no irrigation for the Kharif crop.
The water level of the dam has dropped drastically due to heavy soil accumulation and seepage. The water from the Palpala river has also failed to recharge the dam during the rainy season.
Palpala or Baldiha dam was constructed during the rule of Maharaja Shri Ramchandra Bhanjdeo in 1912. The dam was built by the then-state engineer Jarnold Martin Loe on the river Palpala.
