Who is Barbarik or Khatu Shyam Ji?

Baba Khatu Shyam is related to the Mahabharata period. He was the grandson of Panduputra Bhima. It is said that pleased with the powers and abilities of Khatu Shyam, Shri Krishna granted him the boon of worshiping him in his name in Kali Yuga.

Story of Khatu Shyam Ji

During their exile, the Pandavas were wandering and trying to stay safe when Bhima met Hidimba. Hidimba and Bhima had a son named Ghatotkacha, who was known for his bravery and strength. Ghatotkacha had a son named Barbarik who was also renowned for his valor.

When the war between the Pandavas and Kauravas was about to begin, Barbarik decided to witness the war. When Shri Krishna asked him which side he was on, Barbarik replied that he would fight on the losing side. Concerned that this could backfire on the Pandavas, Krishna asked for a donation to stop him. Barbarik agreed to donate his head, but he wanted to watch the war with his own eyes.

Krishna granted his wish and placed Barbarik’s head on a hill overlooking the battle. After the war, the Pandavas argued about who should get credit for their victory, but Barbarik claimed it was all due to Shri Krishna. Pleased with his sacrifice, Krishna granted him a boon that he would be worshipped in Kali Yuga as Shyam.

How Khatu Shyam Ji Temple was Built?

It is said that his head was found in Khatu village of Rajasthan at the beginning of Kali Yuga. It is said that this wonderful incident happened when milk started flowing on its own from the udder of the cow standing there. When this miraculous incident was excavated, Khatu Shyam’s head was found there.

Now, this dilemma has started among the people that this head should be done. Later they unanimously decided to hand over the head to a priest. Meanwhile, the then ruler of the region, Roop Singh, had a dream of building a temple. Thus, at the behest of Roop Singh Chauhan, the construction of the temple was started at this place and the idol of Khatushyam was installed.

The architecture of Khatu Shyam JI Temple

The temple built by Roop Singh in 1027 AD was mainly modified by a devotee. Diwan Abhay Singh had it renovated in 1720 AD. Thus the idol was placed in the main sanctum sanctorum of the temple.

The temple has been constructed using stones and marble. The door is decorated with gold leaf. There is also a prayer hall known as Jagmohan outside the temple.

How to reach Khatu Shyam Ji?

The Khatu Shyam Ji temple is located in Khatu village, which is situated 80 km from Jaipur. To reach the temple, the nearest railway station is Ringas, which is approximately 18.5 km away.

After reaching the railway station, one can easily hire a taxi or a jeep to reach the temple. For those traveling by air, Jaipur International Airport is the closest airport with a distance of 95 km from the temple.

If you plan to travel by road from Delhi to Khatu Shyam Mandir, it may take around 4 to 5 hours to reach your destination.
