Chaul Alibaug is the former city of Portuguese India, the city of Chaul is now in ruins. It is located about 60 km away from Mumbai, in the south of Maharashtra. It comes under the Raigad district.

History bears witness to the fact that the Portuguese first arrived in Chaul, about 500 years ago, in 1521. The first Russian traveller to India was Afanasy Nikitin after Gujarat, Nikitin reached Chaul to sell his horse. The city was later destroyed in 1570 by the Nizam Shahi Sultan of Ahmednagar. The town of Chaul was later rebuilt in 1613.
