Gurudwara Matan Sahib, situated in the beautiful valleys of Kashmir, is a place of great natural as well as historical importance, where the first Guru Sahib of Sikhism, Sri Guru Nanak Dev Ji, broke the self-indulgence of a learned pundit.

Guru Sahib travelled the world to show the right path. During his third visit, Guru Sahib stayed here near a spring of water giving a wonderful look to the natural scenery.

History About Matan Sahib Gurdwara

Guru Sahib, who came in the year 1517, preached Gurmat and Sikhi at this place and also recited and sang Gurbani. This place is known as Matan. A scholar named Pandit Brahma Das lived in Bijwada town, 12 kilometers away from Matan.

When he came to know that some saint/fakir has come to Matan and is preaching religion to the people, he could not help but feel it.

Pandit Brahma Das also reached the same place carrying all the Sanskrit books he had read. It is said that Pandit ji used to think that there is no one more scholar than him. That’s why he often used to roam around with all the books he had read to show his knowledge to the people.

Also used to challenge them to communicate. Pandit ji also challenged Guru Sahib to discuss and communicate about religion. Then Guru Sahib explained that “Pandit ji you are not able to control your senses after gaining much knowledge. Because of this, the ego of knowledge has arisen in you.”

Guru Sahib recited Gurbani at this place. Which is inscribed on the holy page (Anga) 467 of the Guru Granth Sahib under the title of Salok Mahala 1. Guru Sahib says ‘पडि पडि गडी लदी अहि’…..

This means that if someone reads such a book, which fills many cars, and piles up, it takes months, years, age, and breath just to read it.

But if he does not understand the real thing of God, then there is no use. These words of Guru Sahib break the illusion of Pandit Brahma Das.

The place where Guru Sahib had given the sermon, later a Gurudwara was established in the name of Thada Guru Nanak Dev Ji at this place. But now a temple is also established along with Gurudwara Sahib at this place.

In the year 1766, due to the influence of Gurmukh Singh, a member of the Council of Afghan Region, the governor of Kashmir, Nur-o-Din Khan Bamji, got the building of the Gurdwara of Matan Sahib constructed.
