The reason for taking over and rebuilding this fort was to protect the Harmandir Sahib Gurdwara i.e. the Golden Temple and the city from invaders.

Because of that the fort was further strengthened. After visiting this fort, you can see a lot related to history here. If you are also a history lover, then this Gobindgarh Fort is a must-visit place.

History About Gobindgarh Fort:

It was originally built by the Dhillon Jat Misldar (militia chief) Gujjar Singh Banghi of the Bhangi Misl, a local chieftain in the 18th century.

Gobindgarh was conquered and enlarged in the early 19th century by the Sandhwalia Jat ruler Maharaja Ranjit Singh, who named it after the 10th Sikh guru, Guru Gobind Singh Ji.

The fort had five cannons, including the famous two Zamzama cannons. The structures built during this phase were the innermost enclosure, the Toshakhana (treasury), and the circular path in the central part of the bastions.

In 1805 Maharaja Ranjit Singh strengthened the fort. One of the main reasons for erecting the fort was to protect Harminder Sahib and the city from invaders who used the Grand Trunk Road in the 18th century, often attacking the city for the purpose of looting.

During this phase, ditches and gates were built using preliminary earthen foundations for a contemporary military defense structure inspired by French military fort plans.

The fort was renovated with the help of a French architect. It is reported that Maharaja Ranjit Singh kept his treasure in the Toshakhana which included the famous Kohinoor and supplies for an army of 2000 soldiers in the fort.

In 1849, the British took over the fort and made significant changes. In addition, significant changes were made to the bastions and gates as new artillery technology was adopted.

The Fort Was Handed Over To The Government In 2008

The army occupied the fort from October 1948 to October 5, 2008. During this, 26 Indian Army units remained here.

Since then it was occupied by the army only. On 6 October 2008, the army handed over the fort to the Punjab government.

Former Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh handed over the keys to the fort to the government to open the doors for tourists.
