Sikkim Open For Tourists Lachung Yumthang to re-open for tourists from Dec 1

Sikkim Open For Tourists Lachung Yumthang to re-open for tourists from Dec 1:The tourism department recently issued a month-long advisory reassuring the safety of all places to visit, except for extreme North Sikkim, in the aftermath of the River Teesta flood resulting from the Lhonak Lake outburst.

However, there’s good news for tourists as the Lachung-Yumthang axis in North Sikkim is scheduled to re-open on December 1, accessible along the Sankalang-Toong-Chungthang Road. This specific tourist spot had been temporarily closed since the Teesta River flood incident on October 3.

Tourism Secretary Prakash Chettri addressed the media during a press conference on Wednesday, providing important updates. He mentioned that the Lachung-Yumthang point is now accessible through an alternative route, the Sankalang-Toong-Chungthang Road. It’s worth noting that this new route is approximately 16 kilometers longer than the usual path to Lachung. The advisory reiterated the safety of all locations, excluding extreme North Sikkim, due to the Teesta River flood caused by the Lhonak Lake outburst.

However, tourists must be aware that the Lachen-Gurudongmar point will remain inaccessible. The restoration efforts for this particular point are underway, as disclosed by the Tourism Secretary.

On a noteworthy accolade, Sikkim has garnered recognition as one of the Coolest Places to Visit in 2024 by National Geographic. This prestigious acknowledgment sets Sikkim apart as the only state representing India and one of three selected from Asia.
