We don’t know if this picture is real or fake, but you would definitely like to know the story behind it. British website ‘Daily Mail’ has published this story.

It’s 1916. A man named Charlie Spark used to run a circus. An elephant named Mary was part of this circus. In September 1916, the circus paraded through the city’s main street, named the Circus Kingsport.

During this, 38-year-old Walter Aldridge was riding Mary. He had no special experience in controlling elephants. All he was told was to keep a spear-like stick attached to the elephant’s body so that she would be in control.

During the parade, Mary saw a piece of watermelon lying, which she stopped to eat. The impatient Eldridge pricked him with a stick more than once.

Elephants are known for their anger. Mary did not like Eldridge’s actions. He lifted her by the trunk, threw her down, and crushed her head. Eldridge was dead on the spot.

This was the time when democracy was not strong and only the mob used to take decisions. The angry mob demanded that Mary be killed. The head of the circus, Charlie Spark, accepted the demand without protest. But he decided that he would make Mary’s end visible to the public.

Discussions ensued on how to put Mary to death, and Spark decided that she would be hanged. A 100-ton crane was ordered from another city, Erwin. It was used to lift railway carriages on normal days. Spark arranged for Mary’s to hang in the open so that people could come to see it.

Mary was tied to a rail. A chain was tied around his thick neck. As the crane lifted it, the sky filled with a shrill and ferocious sound. She was in pain. He let out a terrible roar. He could be raised only five feet since the chain was broken. His hip bones were fractured due to a fall from a height. Mary’s feet were still bound by the chain that was attached to the rail.

But this painful spectacle was not over yet. A strong chain was called for and was ruthlessly tied around Mary’s neck. He was picked up again and kept hanging for half an hour. Until there is no doubt about his death. Mary was no more. Mary, who was known by the people there as ‘Murder’s Mary’ i.e. Killer Mary.

It is said that even today the city of Erwin is known because of the hanging of Mary. Once a large grave was also dug in search of Mary, but no trace of her was found.
