IND vs AUS World Cup 2023: In a gripping final at Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad, Australia emerged victorious against India, securing their sixth World Cup title. The match took place on Sunday, 19th November, when Australia triumphed by six wickets. This victory shattered India’s dream of claiming the trophy for the third time, despite a stellar performance of winning 10 consecutive matches in the tournament.
Opting to bowl after winning the toss, Australia’s captain, Pat Cummins, led his team to restrict India to 240 runs in 50 overs. In response, Australia chased down the target by scoring 241 runs for the loss of four wickets in 43 overs. The hero of the match was Travis Head, whose outstanding inning of 141 runs played a pivotal role in securing the title for the Kangaroos. Maransh Labuschagne contributed with an unbeaten 58, while Mitchell Marsh, David Warner, and Steve Smith made useful contributions.
This victory marked Australia’s sixth World Cup triumph, whereas India faced defeat in the final against Australia for the second time, the previous being in 2003 under the captaincy of Ricky Ponting.
KL Rahul and Virat Kohli displayed commendable performances for India, scoring half-centuries with 66 and 54 runs, respectively. However, despite good starts from Rohit Sharma (47) and Suryakumar Yadav (18), the Indian team faltered in the crucial moments. Mitchell Starc was the standout performer for Australia, claiming three wickets, while Pat Cummins and Josh Hazlewood secured two wickets each. Glenn Maxwell and Adam Zampa took one wicket each.
Notably, Kohli and Rahul’s partnership of 67 runs for the fourth wicket was the highest for India in the match. However, the failure to convert promising starts into substantial innings and the subsequent collapse led to India being all out for the first time in the World Cup, sealing their defeat in the final.
