18 Things NOT to Do in Bangkok

To make the most of your trip to Bangkok, there are certain things you should never do. Here are 18 tips to ensure a hassle-free vacation:

  1. Don’t miss a visit to Wat Pho, where you’ll find a 120-foot-long gold-plated sleeping Buddha statue.
  2. Bangkok is a shopper’s paradise, so don’t forget to visit the Chatuchak weekend market and Sampeng for women’s and children’s clothing.
  3. Never buy Buddha statues to take out of the country without following proper procedures.
  4. Spend time in Silom District to feel the real vibes of Thailand.
  5. Take the help of people working at airport counters before hiring a taxi, so they can write down your hotel’s address for the driver in the native language to prevent delays.
  6. Carry insect repellent with you during the rainy season.
  7. Don’t step on coins with the King’s face on them or fold bills with the King’s face on them, as this is considered disrespectful and can result in imprisonment.
  8. Keep a certified photocopy of your passport with you at all times.
  9. Don’t wear tank tops, shorts, off-shoulder dresses, or skirts while visiting temples. Always remove your shoes before entering.
  10. Don’t sit with your feet pointing towards a Lord Buddha figure or bring your hands close to the images.
  11. Never kiss another person near an image or statue of Lord Buddha – it’s considered disrespectful.
  12. Don’t accept any guides approaching you in front of any place, as they may try to charge you more.
  13. Don’t listen to any people or cab driver’s suggestions for souvenir shops, as they will likely tell you only of shops from where they get a commission.
  14. Instead of taking a cruise on the Chao Praya River, take public water transport which will cost less.
  15. Don’t get into a taxi where the meter isn’t set, as they will charge you much higher.
  16. Always bargain when buying anything from the market.
  17. Don’t smoke anywhere other than in designated spaces.
  18. Don’t take photos of locals without their permission, as this can create trouble for you.
