Nilgiri Raj Palace Princely States of India during the British Raj – Odisha Tourism: I and my friend Debu visited Nilagiri Palace, It was an awesome experience to see Raj Palace. Nilgiri is a very small town. Located in the northern part of Odisha, this place has a rich history of its own.

The name Nilgiri often reminds the people of Odisha of something of royal nature. Nilgiri has only one palace built by its king. The palace is known by the name of the place “Nilgiri Palace”. History says that Nilgiri was the original home of the Bhanja and it was a Gadjat state. Gadjat states were the princely states of British India.

At the entrance of the palace lies the main gate of the palace with two lions on either side of the gate. This is also known as the lion’s gate or Singhadwar. The palace itself had been the witness to many brave warriors of the Nilgiri kingdom.

Jayant Chandra is presently the king of Nilgiri Royal Palace. The palace houses many antiquities, such as weapons, musical instruments, wall watches, photographs, chairs, tables, etc. all from the bygone years of the Nilgiri Kingdom.
The object of main attraction within the palace is a well-called Guptabamphi, where the queens bathed prior to the daily rituals in the temples in the palace.
As a princely state, Nilgiri used to have a very cordial relationship with Puri as Nilgiri happens to be the uncle’s house of Gajapati Dibyasingha Deva. Nilgiri was ruled by the Harichandans for three generations as Raja Rama Chandra Mardraj Harichandan planned it, while Govind Chandra Mardraj Harichandan enlarged and Krishna Chandra Mardraj Harichandan enlarged its territory of it.

History records that, it was Rama Chandra who established the capital for the state of Nilgiri earlier known as Nijgad. Rama Chandra Mardaraj Harichandan ruled Nilgiri for 17 years.
The second king in line Krishna Chandra Mardaraja Harichandan, made a mark for his Might, featuring two lions for his heroism and a picture of a snake in the palace premise.
