Mallikarjuna Temple Srisailam Temple History: Mallikarjuna Jyotirlinga is located in the southern part of the Indian state of Andhra Pradesh on the banks of the Krishna river on the Srisailam mountain. The most notable and worth seeing here is the Mukha Mandapa built during the Vijayanagara period. There are several mandapam pillars in the center of the temple and in which there is a huge visible idol of Nadikeshwara.

Mallikarjuna Temple Story

According to Shiv Purana, the story of Mallikarjuna Jyotirlinga is related to the family of Lord Bholenath. It is believed that Lord Shiva’s younger son Ganesh Ji wanted to get married before Kartikeya. On this matter, Bholenath and Mata Parvati put a condition before both of them to solve this problem that whoever walks around the earth first will get married first.

Hearing this, Kartikeya started circumambulating but Ganesh Ji was faster than his intellect, he circumambulated Mother Parvati and Lord Shiva and told them to be like the earth. When Kartikeya came to know about this news, he got angry and went to the mountain of crunch.

When all the efforts to persuade them failed, Goddess Parvati went to pick them up, but seeing them, they fled from there. Frustrated by this, Parvati Ji sat there and Lord Bholenath appeared in the form of Jyotirlinga. This place became visible as Mallikarjuna Jyotirlinga.

Mallikarjuna Temple Shakti Peeth

Shakti Peeth refers to the places where the remains of Goddess Sati fell. Mythology tells that Goddess Sati committed self-immolation because of not being able to tolerate the insult of Lord Bholenath by the father of Goddess Sati, King Daksha.

Lord Shiva raised the burning body of Goddess Sati and performed the tandava and during this time the place where her body parts fell is known as Shakti Peeth. It is believed that Mallikarjuna is the result of his upper lip falling here in the Jyotirlinga. Srisailam Sri Mallikarjuna Swamy Temple is one of the 18 Mahashakti Peethas.
