History of Jhargram District

The history of Jhargram is linked to the medieval history of India, as people believe that in about 1574 AD, Maan Singh came to conquer Bengal on behalf of the Mughal Emperor Akbar the Great from Rajasthan (the erstwhile Rajputana Empire).

He appointed two of his loyal officers in the army, Sarveshwar Singh and his elder brother, to defeat the local tribal rulers of the region known as Jangalkhand, the region was populated by the Santhals, Mallas, Bhumijs, and Lodhas.

The Marathas also ruled this region from 1742 to 1747, they defeated the combined forces of the Nawab and the Raja of Bishnupur. After this, the territory remained an independent state till 1767, after which it became the possession of the East India Company, which remained till 1947.
