National tourism day started in 1948, after the independence of the country. A Tourism Transport Committee was formed to promote tourism in India.
Three years later, i.e. in 1951, there was an increase in the regional offices of Tourism. Apart from Delhi, and Mumbai, tourist offices were set up in Kolkata and Chennai. In the year 1998, a department of tourism was added under the Minister of Tourism and Communications.
