Dhanteras or Dhantrayodashi marks the beginning of the five days long extravagant festival of Diwali. The word Dhanteras is derived from two words -‘dhan’ means wealth and ‘teras’ means the thirteenth day of the moon cycle.
On the auspicious day of Dharteras, Hindu devotees worship Lord Kubera, also known as the God of wealth, and Goddess Lakshmi.
As per Hindu mythology, it is believed that on Dhantrayodashi, Goddess Lakshmi emerged out of the ocean, during the churning of the sea, also known as Samudra Manthan in Hindi.
