Greece’s Stefanos Tsitsipas held his nerve in the final set to beat Germany’s Alexander Zverev 6-3, 6-3, 4-6, 4-6, 6-3 to enter his maiden grand slam final at the French Open.

The first men’s semifinal between fifth seed Stefanos Tsitsipas and sixth Alexander Zverev went the distance on Court Philippe Chatrier. Tsitsipas became the first Greek tennis player to reach any grand slam final.

Tsitsipas played extremely well in the first two sets with superb defending and stinging counterattacks.

Zverev served better as the match progressed, but he struggled to return and was kept well behind the baseline in rallies as Tsitsipas moved him around the court and found angles.

Tsitsipas’ level dropped a bit at the start of the third set, and Zverev made the most of his mistakes to rally. Tsitsipas then opened the fourth set with a double fault and dropped his serve immediately.

The sixth-seeded German, however, regrouped and added more power to his shots with early breaks in the third and fourth sets enough for him to level the match at two sets apiece.

Tsitsipas needed to change his game in the decider and the 22-year-old managed to find an extra gear to seal the contest on his fifth match point and booked a final outing against either top seed Novak Djokovic or 13-time winner Rafa Nadal.

Tsitsipas reached his first Grand Slam final. It’s was his third major semifinal in a row and fourth overall.

Zverev has reached one major final at the US Open last year.
